Oroville Dam: Evacuations and the Heart of Jesus

Yesterday afternoon my wife and I were doing our normal grocery trip when my phone started to buzz with alerts:

I opened my social media pages and started seeing what I had worried all along. (Last Tuesday there was significant damage to the regular spill way of Lake Oroville Dam which caused the Emergency spillway to be used LA Times Article) Mass Evacuations of almost 200,000 people because of dangerous erosion to the Emergency spillway.

The Church I attend in Chico, CA Neighborhood Church of Chico is a designated Red Cross evacuation location. As I watched the news, my heart was provoked to leave my wife and 16 month old son at home and go to my church to serve in anyway possible.

Walking with Jesus can bring uncomfortable situations.  But as Paul writes:

“For the love of Christ compels us…” II Corinthians‬ ‭5:14‬ ‭NKJV‬‬

What I saw brought me to tears…

the look in so many eyes as they arrived…displaced…forced from their homes.  Many elderly and families with small children…

AND the beauty of not just my Church Family pulling together and showing up to serve, but all the donations that poured in from the community at large…

When I finally got home I couldn’t sleep…knowing so many couldn’t sleep in their own beds or homes…as I watched my phone screen with updates my heart was pulled deeper into a place of prayer…

I breathed a sigh of relief when I woke up and saw that the water levels were slightly and the Emergency Spillway had not given way…but we are still in the midst of little facts and unknown future…

If you are looking for a place to lend  hand, just show up.  Find someone who looks like they know what they are doing, and simply ask where you can help…

As a follower of Jesus, let’s show the world what it means to Love our Neighbors and shine the light of Christ
