Neglected Truth: there’s more to it than just following

Have you ever been asked what religion you are? Or have you been straight up asked “are you a Christian?” Gallup is one of the most trusted polls that exists. In December 2015 they conducted a poll to see how many Americans identified themselves as Christian:

img_0601As you can see there has been a steady decline. BUT out of 174,000 that were polled, 75% said they self identified as a Christian.  Given the moral decay of America, it is hard to fathom that 75% of Americans adhere to the teachings of Jesus Christ, after all He is who they identify following.
We see another interesting result from a Gallup poll:

Only 36% of the 75% attend a normal Religious service. Granted, going to a Religious service doesn’t make you a better or worse person. However, we give and prioritize our time based off of what is most important to us.

Americans are really good at lip service. We tend to believe that just because we say it, it must be true. We as Americans are also very good at looking the other way. We despise anything that might disrupt our comfortable lives. The same is true for much of the American Christian Church. Just look at her fruit.

A good tree can’t produce bad fruit, and a bad tree can’t produce good fruit. A tree is identified by its fruit. Figs are never gathered from thornbushes, and grapes are not picked from bramble bushes. A good person produces good things from the treasury of a good heart, and an evil person produces evil things from the treasury of an evil heart. What you say flows from what is in your heart.”    ‭‭Luke‬ ‭6:43-45‬ ‭NLT‬‬

‭‭So again, look at the declining moral fiber of America where 75% claim to be followers of Jesus.

Here is the cold hard truth, Jesus cuts to the point, and it should cause us all to do a personal inventory in our lives:

“If you love me, obey my commandments. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, who will never leave you.  Those who accept my commandments and obey them are the ones who love me. And because they love me, my Father will love them. And I will love them and reveal myself to each of them.” John‬ ‭14:15-16, 21‬ ‭NLT‬

And so we find a neglected truth. IF you love and follow Jesus, THEN you will OBEY His commands…  The fruit of your life will testify if you Love Jesus, regardless of what you say.
