Sin makes us do some crazy things…it causes us to be delusional! It can really mess with a person!
Today on ‘The Blame Game’ we have our three contestants: Adam, Eve, and the Serpent. Find out who wins the Grand Prize! Each will be asked a series of questions, if you get the question right, you move on.
Question 1: Serpent, you may ask Eve any question you would like.
“Did God really say you must not eat the fruit from any of the trees in the garden?” – Gen 3:1 NLT
“Of course we may eat fruit from the trees in the garden,”…”It’s only the fruit from the tree in the middle of the garden that we are not allowed to eat. God said, ‘You must not eat it or even touch it; if you do, you will die.'” – Gen 3:2-3 NLT
Great job Eve! You have answered correctly!
“You won’t die! God knows that your eyes will be opened as soon as you eat it, and you will be like God, knowing both good and evil.” – Gen 3:4-5 NLT
Serpent, that was out of line! You must not speak another word! Questions only!
Question 1: God, you may ask Adam a Question
“Where are you?” – Gen 3:9 NLT
“I heard you walking in the garden, so I hid. I was afraid because I was naked.” – Gen 3:10 NLT
Adam, it is only necessary to give an answer to the question, you do not need to elaborate. Regardless your answer is correct, God, ask another question.
“Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat?” – Gen 3:11 NLT
“It was the woman you gave me, who gave me the fruit, and I ate it.” – Gen 3:12 NLT
Adam, please answer questions with a straight forward answer. Your answer is not acceptable, Eve, it is your turn.
Question 1: God you may ask Eve any question you like
“What have you done?” – Gen 3:13 NLT
“The serpent deceived me, that’s why I ate it.” – Gen 3:13 NLT
Adam and Eve, you have both been disqualified for not answering the questions directly. Because of this, you will be punished. God, choose what you would like to happen as their reward.
The Serpents Reward:
“Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all animals, domestic and wild. You will crawl on your belly, groveling in the dust as long as you live. And I will cause hostility between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring. He will strike your head, and you will strike his heel.” – Gen 3:14-15 NLT
“I will sharpen the pain of your pregnancy, and in pain you will give birth. And you will desire to control your husband, but he will rule over you.” – Gen 3:16 NLT
“Since you listened to your wife and ate from the tree whose fruit I commanded you not to eat, the ground is cursed because of you. All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it. It will grow thorns and thistles for you, though you will eat of its grains. By the sweat of your brow will you have food to eat until you return to the ground from which you were made. For you were made from dust, and to dust you will return.” – Gen 3:17-19 NLT
And the Grand Prize is….
Adam and Eve, you are banished from the Garden. – Gen 3:22-24
I do not know about you, but I am excellent at the blame game! it is so much easier to point the finger at someone else so the focus goes off of me. Unfortunately, God knows all…I sometimes wonder what would’ve happened if Adam and Eve did not play the blame game…I know they disobeyed God by eating the fruit, but would their punishment be any different?
I also wonder how much trouble I have brought on myself because of my purposeful disobedience to God…God ultimately has rules set in place to protect us…and yet we are never satisfied with the restraints we have been placed in, we always strive to grasp for things that are within reach, yet are not supposed to have…
Sin and the blame game remove us from the gift of perfected relationship. It is God’s purpose for our lives to be restored in relationship not only to Him, but to those around us…just imagine the tension between Adam and Eve after this all happened…almost guaranteed if it happened today, one of them would be filing for divorce…
True maturity is made manifest when we own up to our own garbage and accept the consequences for our own actions. Notice, Adam and Eve did not lie to God, they were honest with Him, but they never really owned up to their part of the problem, instead they blamed someone else…
Holy Spirit, come and empower us deep on the inside to live a righteous life in God’s eyes. And when we make mistakes, convict us of those sins, give us the courage to admit our own faults to God and the people around us. Come and help me restore the broken relationships around me. Amen
