Waisted. Criticized. Belittled.
I have learned in life that unless you are facing some sort of resistance, you are probably not moving forward. If you are following Jesus, you will be met with resistance.
“Derrick, you need to calm down…it’s great that you are a Christian, but take a chill pill.”
“God doesn’t expect you to be that zealous!”
“You’ve taken this Jesus following thing a little far, its time to come back to reality.”
“Derrick, are you sure? Is losing your friends really worth this whole Jesus thing?”
“That bike that you were given, could have been sold and the money used to help people in need!”
“That new computer that someone bought you, you don’t need a Mac! Buy a PC and give the rest to someone who really needs the help!”
These are a few examples of things that have been said directly to my face and others via wonderful Facebook messages. Most of these comments were made by ‘church folk’ and some by my closest family. Many people cannot understand why you would give your whole life, your entire being, to worshiping a God that you cannot ‘see’. Most have never experienced God, despite the fact they have followed Him in faith for years, even decades, have never experienced God or His love.
It is very difficult when others try to hold you back because of hurt in their own lives. You see, many times someone responds in a negative way to your faith because you have provoked or triggered a hurt in their lives. Your complete abandonment to follow Jesus goes against everything that they ‘know’.
6 Meanwhile, Jesus was in Bethany at the home of Simon, a man who had previously had leprosy.
7 While he was eating, a woman came in with a beautiful alabaster jar of expensive perfume and poured it over his head.
8 The disciples were indignant when they saw this. “What a waste!“ they said. 9 “It could have been sold for a high price and the money given to the poor.” – Mat 26:6-9 NLT
It is my personal belief that the ones making these remarks did not truly care about the poor. In fact they were more concerned about this extravagant act this woman had just committed. They simply used the poor as an excuse.
10 But Jesus, aware of this, replied, “Why criticize this woman for doing such a good thing to me?
11 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have me.
12 She has poured this perfume on me to prepare my body for burial.
13 I tell you the truth, wherever the Good News is preached throughout the world, this woman’s deed will be remembered and discussed.” – Mat 26:10-13 NLT
Jesus is concerned about our hearts, out of that wellspring comes our words, thoughts, and actions.
Are you meeting resistance? Are you wasting your life on Jesus?
Allow this story below, to provoke you to live a life wasted for Jesus:
36 Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And He went to the Pharisee’s house, and sat down to eat. 37 And behold, a woman in the city who was a sinner, when she knew that [Jesus] sat at the table in the Pharisee’s house, brought an alabaster flask of fragrant oil, 38 and stood at His feet behind [Him] weeping; and she began to wash His feet with her tears, and wiped [them] with the hair of her head; and she kissed His feet and anointed [them] with the fragrant oil.
39 Now when the Pharisee who had invited Him saw [this], he spoke to himself, saying, “This Man, if He were a prophet, would know who and what manner of woman [this is] who is touching Him, for she is a sinner.” 40 And Jesus answered and said to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.” So he said, “Teacher, say it.” 41 “There was a certain creditor who had two debtors. One owed five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 “And when they had nothing with which to repay, he freely forgave them both. Tell Me, therefore, which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon answered and said, “I suppose the [one] whom he forgave more.” And He said to him, “You have rightly judged.”
44 Then He turned to the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I entered your house; you gave Me no water for My feet, but she has washed My feet with her tears and wiped [them] with the hair of her head. 45 “You gave Me no kiss, but this woman has not ceased to kiss My feet since the time I came in. 46 “You did not anoint My head with oil, but this woman has anointed My feet with fragrant oil. 47 “Therefore I say to you, her sins, which [are] many, are forgiven, for she loved much. But to whom little is forgiven, [the same] loves little.” 48 Then He said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” … 50 Then He said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you. Go in peace.” – Luk 7:36-48, 50 NKJV
Most cannot fathom wasting their lives on Jesus because they have not fully grasped what He has done for them. The truth is, if we all understood like this woman did, what Jesus has done for us, we would be so consumed with gratitude, we would want nothing more than to extravagantly ‘waste’ our lives on the worship of Him who is Worthy!
Derrick, are you serious?
