9 And this I pray, that your love may abound still more and more in knowledge and all discernment,
10 that you may approve the things that are excellent, that you may be sincere and without offense till the day of Christ,
11 being filled with the fruits of righteousness which [are] by Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God. …
27 Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, – Phl 1:9-11, 27 NKJV
To Abound comes from the greek word perisseuō which means
- to exceed a fixed number of measure,
- to be left over and above a certain number or measure
- to exist or be at hand in abundance
- to be pre-eminent, or to excel
Paul is praying that our Love would be like that of a flower that is going out from its bulb into a full bloom!
What would it look like if the Church of Christ loved in this way? That our Love would be so pure, people would stop to bask in the beauty of it and be transformed?
This Love must be so evident in our lives, that it draws people in! What would it look like if we loved like Jesus loved? If we allowed our Love to be in such abundance, overflowing, and the pre-eminent thing in our lives?
The Church will never be unified if it cannot or will not Love.
The Love of Christ should Compel us! (2Cor 5:14)
Love is the great super glue that will bind the Church in Unity! Jesus even declares in the book of John, “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”
Oh that in Love we would abound! That in Love we would discover knowledge and exercise discernment! That in Love we would approve of ALL things Excellent! Oh that our Love would be of the greatest sincerity, that we would not be offended! Oh that Love would abound, that we might be filled with the fruits of righteousness!
