Debate | Reflecting Christ

I have committed to shy away from Facebook debates(I forget this a lot).  Nothing good really comes from them. I am open to having a constructive conversation, where both parties are mutually respected.  No name calling, No labeling, opinionated yes.

Lets face it, we all have opinions, about everything.  Holding a position of ‘indifferent’ is still an opinion.  Most opinions are based in emotion, not in fact.  This is why constructive conversation is so difficult. We have an emotional attachment to so many things.  We are emotional beings!  We were created to have emotions and thoughts of our own! When those things get challenged it is very easy to feel hurt, disrespected, embarrassed, anger, pride…and these emotions and feelings get magnified when it happens in public forums, like Facebook.

Think about it, what are some of the hot topic buttons of today?  Abortion, Immigration, Budget, Terrorism, Health Care, Education, and these are just a few.  Even when we read those words, usually some sort of passion comes to mind…maybe your hot button issues are not related to any of those, maybe yours are: Sex Trafficking, Nutrition, Vaccinations, Environmental Issues…

34 “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another. 35 “By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.” – Jhn 13:34-35 NKJV

Above all else, this must be what we strive for.  Not in our own power, but through the empowerment of the Holy Spirit!  We are called to Reflect Jesus!  After all:

20 … we are ambassadors for Christ …
– 2Co 5:20 NKJV

So then,  we are called to a High Standard.  We are called to stand for truth.  Sharing truth is one of the many ways we love one another, but how we share that truth also is how we show love.

8 Finally, all [of you be] of one mind, having compassion for one another; love as brothers, [be] tenderhearted, [be] courteous; 9 not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling… – 1Pe 3:8-9 NKJV

We must have and exercise compassion for one another, being tenderhearted, courteous!  And the biggest reason for not entering into debate, not returning evil for evil or reviling for reviling.  Debate can quickly turn into that…

Allow your words to be seasoned with salt, truth will lead the way.

Jesus, forgive me for any way that I have not loved my neighbor in the area of speech.  You have called us to boldly proclaim the truth, but to also reflect who You are.  You did not clear the temple every time you went.  You engaged in conversations with those around You.  Jesus, help me to engage in bold but loving conversations with those around me!  May I not enter into senseless debate, but deliver truth in love.  In Your Mighty Name, Amen
