The All Powerful God, Creator of All Things, God of Covenant, has the very emotions that both you and I have, experience, and have the ability to experience. But He experiences without fault, without sin, and with all perfection!
Do you believe that God could feel regret or grief?
In fact, He does. If you can remember back to the story of Noah, sin ran so rampant that it says:
5 Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man [was] great in the earth, and [that] every intent of the thoughts of his heart [was] only evil continually. 6 And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. 7 So the LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” – Gen 6:5-7 NKJV
God was sorry for His creation! I cannot begin to fathom the hurt in God’s heart, to be brought to such a place!
We have all been in a place where we loved someone and would do anything for them, yet they only turn their back on us. Every single one of us has experienced betrayal. That horrible sting in the deepest depths of the heart. That physical pain because of a very real emotion that we feel.
This feeling that we have felt is but a glimpse of what the Father in Heaven was feeling at this moment in time.
But God found a man:
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. 9 …Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God. – Gen 6:8-9 NKJV
And so the story goes, Noah built an arc with his family, God brought forth two of every kind of animal, and they all got in the ark.
God sent utter destruction when He sent the rain to the earth. But He loved His creation so much, that He saved it through Noah. We see later on that God loved His creation so much that He sent His only Son to save and redeem it.
Can you imagine being Noah and his family? The fear as it is raining, the fear as they are floating…? The thoughts of, “If God has done this once, will He do it again!?”
11 “Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.” … 13 “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. 14 “It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; 15 “and I will remember My covenant which [is] between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 “The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that [is] on the earth.” – Gen 9:11, 13-16 NKJV
God’s heart was filled with regret and grief, yet in His Love He produced an everlasting covenant to never destroy the life on earth with a flood again! And in God’s Love, He chose to provide a sign of the covenant: A RAINBOW!
